The Great Escape: How We Accidentally Fell in Love with Nieu-Bethesda (Again)
Chapter 1: The Great Indecision of 2025
Picture this: You’ve just survived another soul-crushing period at work, and your brain feels like it’s been through a blender set to “corporate grind.” You NEED a break. You DESERVE a break. But where to go when you have the attention span of a caffeinated goldfish?
Our options were:
- Hogsback Snow Hunting – Because apparently, we enjoy freezing our assets off
- Die Kompass Berg Ride near Nieu-Bethesda – For when you want to feel alive AND terrified simultaneously
- Petrus se Brand in Knysna Forest – The ride we’ve been promising ourselves since approximately the Jurassic period
Naturally, being the decisive adults we are, we decided to… decide later. Monday would be judgment day! 🎯
Chapter 2: Birthday, F1, and Life Choices
Sunday rolled around like a lazy cat, and it was birthday time! 🎂 Nothing says “celebration” like having friends over to watch grown men drive very fast cars in circles while we shout at the TV like we’re personally coaching them.
My heart belongs to Charles Leclerc and Ferrari (yes, I enjoy emotional pain), and naturally, they decided to gift me a birthday performance that was about as spectacular as a damp firework. No win, no podium, but I will be a Ferari fan till the day I die. 🏎️💔
Chapter 3: Weather Gods and Spontaneous Decisions
Monday morning dawned with that particular brand of excitement that comes with checking weather apps obsessively. Like meteorological fortune-tellers, we consulted the digital oracles and… SNOW was predicted for Nieu-Bethesda!
That settled it faster than you can say “pack the thermal underwear.”
At 10 am, in a burst of what I can only describe as “functional adulting,” we actually made a decision AND followed through with it. I called The Furrows, where we’d stayed before, and the magic happened:
“Good morning, Nicky!” came the cheerful voice. “We have our honeymoon suite available at a very reasonable price!”
Wait, what? They remembered us? AND they have a honeymoon suite? AND it’s reasonably priced? This felt like the universe apologizing for Ferrari’s weekend performance.
Decision made: Nieu-Bethesda, here we come! 🚗💨

Chapter 4: The Honeymoon Suite That Wasn’t Actually for Honeymooners
Arriving just after 2 PM, we discovered that sometimes the universe DOES have a sense of humor. The room was even better than our last visit – imagine a cozy lounge with a fireplace so magnificent it could have its own Instagram account, paired with a bedroom so stylishly decorated.
Then we checked the weather again (because apparently, we’re addicted to meteorological drama), and it confirmed SNOW was predicted for the next night.
You know what that meant?
BOOK ANOTHER NIGHT! ❄️
Because nothing says “spontaneous adventure” like doubling down on your holiday when frozen precipitation is involved.

Chapter 5: Aasvoelkop and the Cycle of Life (and Wind)
With accommodation sorted and snow excitement building, we decided to stretch our legs with a “quick cycle” to Aasvoelkop – the peak that had been winking at us since we drove into town.
The ride TO Aasvoelkop was pure magic – part gravel, part tar, all magnificent. We flew down those roads like we were auditioning for a cycling commercial.
The ride BACK? Well, let’s just say the wind had opinions about our direction, and those opinions were expressed forcefully in our faces. Mother Nature clearly has a sense of humor and timing. 🌬️😤

Chapter 6: Marette se Bank and Permission Anxiety
Just when we thought we were heading home, Roger spotted a sign that might as well have been labeled “DETOUR INTO ADVENTURE.” There it was: Marette se Bank (Marette se Bench).
But wait – there was a gate!
Cue the internal debate that every polite person knows: “Are we allowed? Is this trespassing? Will we become local legends as ‘those tourists who got arrested for bench-sitting?’”
Wisdom prevailed (for once), and we decided to ask the locals later. Because nothing ruins a holiday like an unexpected encounter with rural law enforcement.

Chapter 7: Nieu-Bethesda: The Full Cycling Tour
What followed was basically a masterclass in small-town exploration on two wheels. We pedaled past:
- The World Famous Owl House ✓ (been there, done that, bought the slightly peculiar t-shirt)
- Quaint houses that looked like they stepped out of a storybook ✓
- Little gravel streets that made our bikes feel very important ✓
- The Fossil Field ✓ (because nothing says family fun like ancient dead things)
The beauty of Nieu-Bethesda is that it’s mostly level, which means you can pretend you’re fit while actually just enjoying the scenery. Win-win! 🚴♀️
Chapter 8: Sundowners and Local Intelligence
Armed with local permission (because we’re nothing if not polite rule-followers), we finally made it to Marette se Bank for sundowners.
[Here’s where I should mention the beautiful story: This viewpoint bench was erected by Yvonne (van Niekerk) du Plessis in loving memory of her 46-year friendship with Marette (Wolfaardt) Pienaar, who passed away in 2007. From here, you can watch the Compassberg towering over the serene village – it’s absolutely breathtaking at sunrise and sunset.]
The sunset was spectacular, the view was magnificent, and for a moment, we understood why people write poetry about moments like this. (We didn’t write poetry, but we definitely took seventeen nearly identical photos.) 📸🌅

Chapter 9: Die Waenhuis – Because Why Fix What Ain’t Broke?
For dinner, we committed the ultimate tourist sin: we went back to the SAME restaurant as last time. Die Waenhuis – again.
But here’s the thing about finding a gem: when you discover friendly staff, delicious food, and that perfect small-town atmosphere, why gamble on disappointment? Sometimes being predictable is actually being smart.
The dinner was even better than we remembered, which is saying something because our memories had already elevated it to near-mythical status. 🍽️

Chapter 10: Fireside Confessions and Red Wine Revelations
Back at our honeymoon suite (still giggling about that), we lit that magnificent fireplace and opened a bottle of red wine. There’s something about flames and wine that makes you philosophical.
Here’s the confession: The FIRST time I visited Nieu-Bethesda, I was thoroughly in the “been there, done that, never coming back” camp.
Yet here we were – THIRD visit in recent years!
The second visit (also snow hunting) had been so spectacular that we’d actually made a list of things to do “next time.” And like the organized humans we pretend to be, we were systematically working through that list.
Sometimes the best destinations sneak up on you like that – they don’t grab you immediately, but they plant tiny seeds of “what if” that grow into full-blown “we have to go back.”
Tomorrow: Compass Berg Awaits!
As we sat by our fire, wine-warmed and content, we contemplated tomorrow’s adventure: the Compass Berg road ride. The anticipation was real, the wine was excellent, and snow was coming.
Life was pretty much perfect.
Stay Tuned for Part 2: “Snow, Sweat, and Compass Berg Survival!”
Because every good adventure deserves a sequel, and we’re nothing if not committed to our questionable life choices… ❄️🚴♀️

P.S. If you’re ever in Nieu-Bethesda, do yourself a favor: – Stay at The Furrows (ask for the honeymoon suite) – Eat at Die Waenhuis
Cycle to Aasvoelkop – Watch the sunset from Marette se Bank – And maybe, just maybe, you’ll understand why we keep coming back to this magical little town that quietly steals hearts, one visit at a time. 💕
