Louvain Escapades: A Pit Stop to Remember!

Louvain Escapades: A Pit Stop to Remember!

After a weekend packed with fun in Cape Town, it was time to head home. But why make a straight trip when you can throw in a little adventure, right? On our drive down, a sign for Louvain caught our eye, promising mountain biking, 4×4 trails, and accommodation for every taste. Originally, Knysna was in our plans, but the prospect of Louvain lured us like a siren’s song. “Let’s do something different,” we mused, and on Sunday, we found ourselves steering towards Louvain.

Arriving at a respectable 1 PM, we were greeted by the owner, who turned out to be an old acquaintance from our microlight flying days. He gave us a grand tour of the place, reminding us how small the world really is. Next, we met Ibrahim, the unofficial mayor of hospitality, who brought us wood for our braai (barbecue) and introduced us to our cozy chalets. With no other guests around, the whole place felt like our private little kingdom.

Louvain charmed us with its range of offerings—from camping and glamping to chalets and bigger houses. It’s the perfect wedding spot; they can fit the whole wedding entourage right there! We were introduced to Ibrahims son named Louvain, a living homage to this beautiful farm where he was born.
After unpacking, it was time to tackle the trails on our mountain bikes. Rain had generously showered the paths earlier, turning them into a hilarious mud-splashing escapade. We explored a short single track before declaring it a strategic retreat due to the overly enthusiastic mud.

But explorers don’t quit easy. We discovered a charming farm road leading towards what promised to be a lighthouse. Instead, we found an adorable little church and a breathtaking wedding venue. Alas, mud won again, so we vowed to return to conquer that lighthouse another day.

Back at our chalet, the wind tried to dampen our spirit and our plans for a scenic glass of wine. So, we packed a picnic and found a picturesque spot to dine in the boot of our car. Brilliant views, excellent wine, and shelter from the gale—a trifecta of success!

As the sun set, we headed back for a snug braai at the chalet, reflecting on our wonderful weekend. We awoke with the sun for the final leg of our journey, already planning our inevitable return to Louvain for more adventures and delightful picnics.
